College Football: Week 14

Hello once again to the preview post for the week to come of college football. For the first time, I am writing from the great city of Columbus, OH! It's exciting to be back at home and with the family and friends I have grown to love. But being home doesn't mean taking a week off.

Before I get into the top 15 games, I have to throw out some congratulations to Ball State. Their game vs. Western Michigan was no doubt one of the top 15 games but the Tuesday start threw me off guard and I forgot it. But I would've picked the Cardinals. And now that they are 12-0 with one game left, let me just say, this team is for real and should be getting some BCS consideration. Nate Davis could easily be the best QB in the 2009 or 2010 draft and this is a team that is full of confidence. Good for Ball State and good for the MAC.

TOP 15 GAMES

GAME OF THE WEEK

1. #19 Oregon @ #17 Oregon State - I thought hard about this one but honestly, this game means a lot while others really won't mean more until the season is over. For Oregon, the game is for pride. But for ORST, this game means a Pac-10 championship and a berth into the Rose Bowl. A loss not only sends USC to Pasadena but probably OSU to a BCS game. Lot on the line in this one. Despite Jacquizz Rogers being out, I like OREGON STATE because the game is in Corvallis, the same site as the win over USC.

REST OF THE BEST

2. #3 Oklahoma @ #11 Oklahoma State - Another upset that could really shakeup the BCS title game picture. Oklahoma looked great against Tech but let's remember, the game was at home and the Sooners knew they needed it badly. OKST is no pushover though. In fact, expect them to play with more fire with this being a rivalry game as well. OKST's two losses are to Texas and Tech so no doubt, they have played great competition. And with this game in Stillwater, the fans will be leaning toward the Cowboys hardcore. I'm not 100% sure but I think OKLAHOMA STATE is gonna pull off the "upset"

3. #2 Florida @ #23 Florida State - Another one that could really mess with the BCS picture. Florida has been impressive since the Ole Miss game but again, all that goes out the window in a rivalry game. FSU has plenty enough talent to pull off this upset and plenty of incentive (knock the Gators from the title picture). And while I like to think the Gators being on the road will hurt them, I don't think it will detrermine this game. FLORIDA wins and makes me miserable.

4. Notre Dame @ #5 USC - Who we kidding? This game is huge for various reasons. USC hoping to stay in the national title hunt and finish 11-1. Notre Dame trying to finish at 7-5 and keep their head coach in that position. After the loss to Syarcuse, Charlie Weis knows his job isn't exactly secure right now. And while we all know the Irish are going to put 200% in this game to save good 'ol Charlie, the Trojans defense is just too dominant. USC rolls at home and the Irish spend the next 5-6 weeks pondering if they should pull the trigger.

5. Auburn @ #1 Alabama - All the stats say this one should be lopsided. But this is the Iron Bowl, a rivalry game spanning many years. But lately, it's been all about the Tigers, winning the last 6 games. So can they pull off a huge win this season and extend the streak to 7 games. Fat chance but it'd be cool if they do. ALABAMA wins but if they don't, Tommy Tuberville may keep his job.

6. Texas A&M @ #2 Texas (FRI) - Another game that looks like a blowout until you remember that rivalry games are different. The Aggies have had it rough in their first year under Mike Sherman but that's to be expected. But it's game 12 now and this is the game the Aggies know can change their view of the season. Meanwhile, Mack Brown and hsi team come into this one knowing an Oklahoma loss keeps them well in the thick of the title hunt, but not the conference. It's senior day in Austin as well so I'm goin with TEXAS to win by a large number.

7. Fresno State @ #9 Boise State (THU) - Obviously, this one is big for Boise State, because it keep their BCs hopes alive. With the right amount of upsets, the Broncos could find themselves right in the mix. And it's funny that they have to cap off their perfect regular season against the team that I thought initially would threaten that mark. Fresno State had high expectations this season but have not met them. But they still have great talent and if the blue field does not distract them too much, will stay in the game until the end. I'll go with BOISE STATE but this one should be close.

8. Syracuse @ #16 Cincinnati - Not many would have thought this would be the game to determining the Big East champion. Many would have said the Pitt-WVU this week but nope, it's this one. The Cuse comes in on the heels of a greta win over Notre Dame that may have squashed Charlie Weis' coaching career (ironically at the same time their coach's career will at the end of the season). And now with some added confidence of winning on the road, they face a good Bearcat team that beat Pitt last week. The pick here is CINCINNATI because Syracuse is still Syracuse.

9. Virginia @ Virginia Tech - Just like the game above this, this one will determine what team will play for the ACC championship. In the Coastal division, it's very easy. VT wins, they move to the championship. If Virginia, then GT heads to the game. Lot on the line in Blacksburg but home field means nothing in the ACC this season. VIRGINIA and Al Groh will win this one.

10. West Virginia @ Pittsburgh (FRI) - The two faves for the Big East title now find themselves hoping and praying for a Cincy update. And since that will not happen on Saturday, this game is all about revenge. Remember when Pitt beat WVU and ended their national title dreams. Uh oh...

11. #18 Georgia Tech @ #13 Georgia - In most seasons, this would be an easy choice. Dawgs winning in Athens. But the GT offense is so different than any other UGA has faced and needless to say, UGA has not performed well vs. offenses that are unique. If the Dawgs can stop Dwyer, then they'll be just fine. The key to GEORGIA winning this one is keeping the ball safe and establishing a run game with Knowshon Moreno. Bulldogs 34-28

12. Kansas @ #13 Missouri - Really doesn't mean anything. Mizzou is firmly in the Big 12 title game. Kansas has been a disappointment, especially in the 2nd half. So who is my pick to win this Big 12 North showdown? MISSOURI by 21 or more.

13. Baylor @ #7 Texas Tech - I know they lost to Oklahome terribly but Tech is no slouch. Baylor will go into Lubbock thinkin of an upset. Well, they better hope. TEXAS TECH wins big,

14. South Carolina @ Clemson - Neither are ranked so should be no big deal but trying to lower the expectations of a rivalry game like this is stupid. Clemson is starting to gain confidence but wait until they see that Gamecocks defense. SOUTH CAROLINA wins.
Gamecocks 24-10

15. Ohio @ Miami (OH) - I had this whole thing ready for when these two teams played. Big rivalry game versus the smartest two schools in the MAC. But smarts don't equal talent and that's the case in this one. These teams are bad and this game will be boring. But will win this one. I promise. Bobcats 33-14

CFB Week 13 Recap

So I decided for the next two weeks, I would change my recap format. First off, do it after I hear about the BCS standings since those are obviously the talk of the college football town. And secondly, I'm just gonna talk about things I truly care about instead of forcing myself to come up with 11 topics. And with three weeks left and some controversial BCS rankings, I've got plenty to talk about.

First off, the SEC is not the same powerhouse it used to be and we need to remember that. As of now, there are 4 teams from the SEC in the AP Top 25. Bama, FLA, UGA and Ole Miss at #25. Yeah, that's it. No Auburn. No LSU. No South Carolina. The SEC is weak this season. So before people go crazy about how these two teams play in a conference where they get tested each week, let's be frank. Not this season. The Big Ten and ACC both have 4 in the Top 25 and they're perceived as weaker. If you say so...

Oh, and speaking of that, what makes Florida so much better than teams like Texas, Okla, Tech and PSU? I really thought about this and honestly, can't figure out why the Gators are gettin so much cred? They have one, yes, ONE win over a currently ranked team in UGA, and they haven't exactly played amazing this season. Meanwhile, the 3 Big 12 teams all beat each other and more. Oklahoma has 2 (Cincy, TCU), Texas has 2 (OKST, Mizzou) and Tech has 1 (OKST). And PSU has 3 (OSU, MSU, ORST).

And more on PSU. There's no love for the Nittany Lions. Only two games (in which they won) have they scored less than 34 pts. Same can be said for Florida. Both are giving up 12 pts a game so defenses are about equal. And again, PSU is playing better competition. Compare the losses too. PSU and FLA both lost by one point, both in agonizing fashion. But PSU lost on the road to bowl-bound Iowa (8-4). FLA lost at home to bowl-bound Ole Miss (7-4) team. So why no love for the Nittany Lions? Apparently, because they don't have Tim Tebow. Absolute joke.

On a different note, how about the fact that the OSU-Michigan rivalry isn't fun anymore. I mean, it was cool when OSU won 2 or 3 times in a row. And it was fun when it was #1 vs. #2 with the winner destined to get beaten down by the Gators. But now, it's just not fun. OSU has won 7 of 8 and it looks like it could 9 of 10 since Richie Rod is gonna need time to get his people for his system. Plus, when you're in Georgia and no one here cares, it kinda dampens the excitement. I don't know about you but maybe it's time we make Penn State a rival too.

And how about ESPN showing a MAC game that deserved the national attention. It was a great moment for the conference. An undefeated Ball State team taking on a very good Central Michigan squad. And the teams did not disappoint, putting on a good show especially in the second half. This makes up for all the meaningless games they have shown (my Bobcats included). Hopefully now, Ball State can get some love.

Oh, and do you find yourself rooting for Oregon State? Just think, a USC team being shut out of the Rose Bowl and sent to play a team like Utah in the Fiesta Bowl. Oh, how happy I would be. I'm not a Trojan fan at all. The only downside of seeing Oregon State keep the Trojans from Pasadena is the impending rematch of ORST and PSU. I'd much rather see PSU vs. USC but beggars can;t be choosers.

And finally, time to play Devil's advocate. Still a good chance that the following things happen in the next two weeks. (They happened last season to different teams). Oklahoma loses to OKST in Stillwater. Florida falls at Florida State. Tech loses to Mizzou and Florida beats Bama in conference championships. What happens? And don't forget two other rivalry games off the radar but recent history says they should most definitely be on. Auburn @ Bama (Tigers have won the past 6 games) and Texas @ Texas A&M (Aggies have have won the past 2 games). USC should roll over Notre Dame and Tech should beat Baylor (PSU is done). Let's hope some of these "upsets" happen, just so we can have more things to talk about and maybe move a college football playoff near the top of Barack Obama's to-do list.

That's all folks. Enjoy the Turkey Day. Preview post will be up Wednesday as usual, from Columbus, OH!

Why It's Great To Be An OSU Fan

Notice the title. I'm strictly talking about being a fan. I'm not talking about being an Ohio State Buckeye or OSU alum. Just strictly being a fan. And really, it is great to be a fan of the Buckeyes.

But why? Well, as you know, I am here in Augusta, GA for 2 years and that means, I am stuck in SEC/ACC country. And while some may say that's great for college football (SEC) and college basketball (ACC), it's really not. Because I am a Big Ten guy, born and bred. I like the football and basketball tough, defensive and low-scoring.

So initially, I thought the move to Augusta meant the end of Big Ten sports for me for awhile, including my Buckeyes. Well guess again. Because OSU is well, OSU, I haven't missed a Buckeye game yet. Because OSU football is always good and well respected, you can count on them being on one of the many ESPN networks.

And what if the Big Ten Network televises them? Not a problem. Unlike any other conference, I can catch the Bucks on that because the Big Ten has their own network. I find it ironic how once I moved to GA, I went from hating the BTN to loving it because it allows me to see my Bucks. And if I happen to miss a game, Hakuna Matata. Comcast has the BTN On Demand, meaning I can catch extended game highlights at any time, in HD no less.

And the same goes for basketball. I just took a look at the schedule and yep, every OSU game will be on either ESPN, CBS or BTN. That's right. No Fox Sports Ohio or STO. Just networks where Matt in GA can see OSU anytime. What a life.

But what else makes it fun to be an OSU fan? Wel how about just how good their two big programs are? Not many programs in the nation have a great basketball AND football program. Schools like Florida, Texas, and Oklahoma are some that do but OSU is one of those who just seem to always have both. It's nice knowing that both programs are gonna be good every season. 10 wins or so from the football team. 20 wins or so from the bball team. And even in a year like last year when OSU bball barely if at all cracked the Top 25, they go on to win the NIT.

And let's not forget that no other college program has been in 3 national title games in 2 years lately. I'm strictly talking about football and bball here. Yeah, OSU went 0-3 but think about all those schools that would just go crazy to have ONE chance in a title game. And besides the fact that we went winless in those title games, the great season and great run to get to those games makes being an OSU fan that much more fun.

But what else? Well how about the fact even here in GA, I see Buckeye fever. Of course, I have been inundated with South Carolina and Georgia license plates, bumper stickers, car flags etc... and don't forget about the occasional Clemson, Georgia Tech, and Georgia Southern paraphenalia as well. But after those 5 schools, what school have I seen the most represented down here? None other than Ohio State. Whether it's just a simple hat at the baseball game or the basketball shorts at the gym, it's refreshing to know I'm not the only Buckeye in the Peach State.

So say what you want about how obnoxious OSU fans are (I agree) and how annoying the OH-IO cheer is (no doubt), but I can't think of another school that is more fun to follow year-round and from anywhere in the USA. GO BUCKS!

College Football: Week 13

Well, I don't know about you but I am really excited for this week in college football. There are a couple rivalries, some great conference showdowns, and one game that really impacts the BCS title game picture. And for mid-November, the temperatures may be getting colder but trust me, the college football season is just heating up.

It was a great prediction week for me, going 13-2. But it was such a bad week of games so picking them wasn't all that hard. But this week is going to be tougher. And it all starts with the obvious game of the week.

TOP 15 GAMES

GAME OF THE WEEK
1. #2 Texas Tech @ #5 Oklahoma
- Doesn't get much better than this. Two of the best offenses in the nation taking on each other in a game with huge BCS title implications. If Tech wins, they clinch the Big 12 South. If the Sooners pull off the "upset", they turn the title picture upside down. Both teams average more than 47 PPG and both defenses give up more than 21 PPG, so expect a bunch points to be scored. I'm really torn on this one. I just can't wait to see it. It's in Norman and that may be the difference. I'll pick OKLAHOMA but don't care either way.

REST OF THE BEST
2. #16 BYU @ #8 Utah - Another game with big implications. If Utah wins, they will have pretty much punched their ticket to a BCS bowl game. A BYU upset brings in Ball State and Boise State into the discussion. Both teams have had this one circled since day one. Both are great teams and have shown that all season. I really think BYU is the more talented team but Utah has been winning the close games as of late. I see the same happening this week. UTAH wins and will be bowling in January.

3. #14 Ball State @ Central Michigan (WED) - Yes, this deserves to be talked about. Both team unbeaten in the MAC, and the winner probably heading to the MAC Championship. Obviously, stakes are higher for the Cardinals, who at 10-0 are 3 wins away from a possible BCS game, which would be the first for the MAC. The fun matchup for this game is the QB matchup. Nate Davis of BSU vs. Dan LeFevour of CMU. These QBs alone may begin a second wave of great MAC QBs in the NFL. Another toss-up pick for me but I'll go with BALL STATE to stay perfect.

4. #17 Michigan State @ #7 Penn State - Big game in the Big Ten. MSU has snuck under the radar all season. Only two losses are a 7-pt loss to Cal in Week 1 and the 45-7 stomping to OSU. But they are still 9-2 and capable of beating PSU. Lot on the line for the Nittany Lions. A win clinches the Rose Bowl and keeps slim national title hopes alive. A loss sends them to the Capital One or Outback Bowl, which would be a big disappointment. I like MSU to play better than they did against OSU but PENN STATE wins the game and will head to Pasadena.

5. #20 Pittsburgh @ #19 Cincinnati - Yet another matchup of two ranked teams and this one may decide who will represent the Big East in the BCS. If Cincy wins, all they have to do is beat lowly Syracuse and they are Big East champs. Pitt still has WVU on the schedule but a road win over Cincy at least lets them control their destiny. Cincy is perfect at home but this is by far their toughest test yet. I picked Pitt to win the Big East in the preseason but things change. I'm going with CINCINNATI and mad props to Brian Kelly for getting his team this far.

6. #21 Oregon State @ Arizona - The big storyline in this game is that an Oregon State win here and against rival Oregon next week gives them the Pac-10 title and possibly depriving USC of a BCS bowl game. A loss though just takes them out of the ntaional spotlight. Arizona has been a disappointment this season, unable to win the close game. If there were ever a time to win a big one, this is it. But I like OREGON STATE to get the job done on the road.

7. Michigan @ #10 Ohio State - It's been a few years since this game really wasn't a big deal. And while it is always important in Columbus and Ann Arbor, anywhere else it's just a rivalry game that doesn't deserve its hype this season. Michigan has been downright awful in Richie Rod's first season but we all saw it coming. Maybe not this bad, but bad. Meanwhile for OSU, this should be another satisfying win over the boys up North and the first of hopefully 3 wins over Michigan for Terrelle Pryor. OHIO STATE wins on senior day and all but clinches their BCS bowl game via at-large. Buckeyes 41-13

8. #23 Miami (FL) @ Georgia Tech (THU) - Not a bad Thursday nighter this week. Randy Shannon has done a great job with this Miami squad and has them oh so close to a ACC Coastal Division championship. But GT and 3 others are still in the hunt, just one game back. That's right, 4 teams. The ACC's best overall record is 7-3 and the worst is 4-6. Talk about mediocre. Anyways, Josh Nesbitt's health is a key factor in whether or not GT wins. If he is healthy and plays, then in my APPY pick, GEORGIA TECH wins., If Nesbitt is hurt, then this becomes a toss-up.

9. West Virginia @ Louisville - Neither are ranked but for the Big East, this is big because a WVU wins keeps them tied with Cincy and Pitt. WVU is rooting for Pitt to win because WVU has already lost to Cincy, giving them the tiebreaker. But WVU better take care of business themselves. L'Ville has lost 3 in a row but hung tough with Cincy last week. I'm picking WEST VIRGINIA.

10. Florida State @ #22 Maryland - Another ACC matchup of two teams that have been jumping in and out of the Top 25. FSU looked to be firmly in but have dropped two of the last 3. Meanwhile, MD is fresh off an upset of UNC. But MD has been terrible when they've been ranked while FSU has been better when unranked. Gimme FLORIDA STATE to nab the win.

11. #9 Boise State @ Nevada - This may not look like a big game but it is. A Utah loss but BSU in the driver's seat for a BCS bowl. Not to mention also last year, these two teams took part in a 59-57 thriller in Boise with the Broncos prevailing. So despite the fact that Boise State is the overwhelming favorite, expect this one to be close. BOISE STATE will probably win though.

12. Boston College @ Wake Forest - Just another ACC matchup and like the others, impacts the division race. Both need a Maryland loss to get back in the race but a loss knocks both out of it. I don't like how Wake has looked this season so I'll go with BOSTON COLLEGE.

13. Stanford @ California - Yes, neither are ranked and neither is going for a conference championship. But Stanford is one win away from bowl eligibility and considering just two years ago, they went 1-11, it's pretty darn impressive. And you know what, with a bowl game on the line, I'm going with STANFORD.

14. Iowa @ Minnesota - A couple of 7-4 teams hoping to end their season on a good note. Iowa has won 4 of 5, including the huge upset of PSU. Meanwhile, after a 7-1 start, Minny has lost 3 in a row and gone from New Year's Day bowl to possibly the Motor City bowl. Yikes. I know they are on the road but IOWA should win this game.

15. Washington @ Washington State - It's been bad in the state of Washington lately. The Sonics moved out. The Mariners lost 100 games despite a $100 million payroll (first time ever). The Seahawks have just 2 wins. And their two D-1 schools have combined for one win this season. But if there is a bright side, it's that they will double that total after this week. Washington comes into this one winless and this is Ty Willingham's last chance to win before he heads out. Meanwhile, Washington State has just been horrendous since the Ryan Leaf days. Thankfully, they have a good basketball team. They call this rivalry game the "Apple Cup". Well, this year, it's rotten. NO ONE wins in the end but WASHINGTON wins the game for their coach.

TEAMS I LOVE (OR ACT LIKE I LOVE)
Akron @ Ohio
- It's senior day for the Bobcats so the emotions will be high for the players. But they won't be high for the fans that are seniors. They won't even be there. The last day of the quarter is Friday and something tells me, not many are gonna stay to watch a 2-8 team try to win the final game in Peden. It doesn't help either that Akron is a pretty good team too. I hate to say it but AKRON wins and OU hopes to get win #3 in Oxford. Zips 30-14

BONUS PREDICTION!
MLS CUP 2008: Columbus Crew vs. New York Red Bulls
- It's not football but it's futbol! The Crew have been the bets team in the MLS all season. The Red Bulls barely made the playoffs but may be the hottest team right now. I'm not gonna act like an expert on soccer here. I just wanna throw some hometown love to the Crew. COLUMBUS WINS 3-1

A BCS Rant

I know, I know, you've heard it before. The BCS is terrible and we need a playoff. Heck, even our President-Elect Barack Obama said it would be the one thing he would like to see changed in sports. That's right. Not steroids. Not the LPGA English-only rule. Not even banning Jay Mariotti from covering sports.

And why is creating a playoff system so important to the sports world right now? Because it's just the right thing to do. Think about it. The Big 12 South has easily 3 of the best teams in college football this year. But in this dumb system we have now, only one will even get a shot for a national title. And if Oklahoma beats Texas Tech, then who should go? Yeah, you can bring up schedule strength, point differential, most players in the NFL, etc... but in the end, it wouldn't be right to deny any of them a shot.

What if Florida State upsets Florida? And what if Florida beats Alabama? And what if Oregon State wins out and USC doesn't even win the Pac-10? Seriously, how does a sport that may have the largest following in the United States have the most flawed system?

Some say a playoff system would devalue the regular season? But how? Just like in every other sport, a loss hurts. Granted, in MLB, a loss does not hurt as much as one in the NFL but no matter what, it hurts. If people think an 11-0 teams is gonna not play hard in game #12 because they think they've clinched their playoff spot, they're ridiculous. This is college football, not pros. These guys come to play every week.

And I don't see anyone in any other Division of college football complaining about how the playoff system is making the regular season less entertaining. Instead, they get to see the best teams settle it the way it should be settled: on the field, not by the votes of coaches who don't watch the games, media members biased towards their region and inanimate computers that have not one clue what the heck is going on.

So what do I propose? Keep the bowl system. Let as many 6-6 teams feel great about their mediocre seasons by sending them to Boise or Mobile for a meaningless bowl game that will probably cost them more money than what they will earn for playing. All I ask is the cotton Bowl and Capital One (Citrus) Bowl be taken out of the mix.

That leaves those two and the BCS 4 for an 8-game playoff. Who is included? Well, it can get tricky here. For the past two years, I proposed the champion of the BCS conferences and two at-large. But as this season continues, I want to rescind that proposal and go with a new one and it's pretty simple.

As much as I hate the BCS standings, keep them for the sake of playoff seeding/qualification. Of course, I would change the criteria for the BCS standings (as in get rid of the 5-computer system). But anyways, the top 8 in the BCS standings make the playoffs. However, if there is a non-BCS school that finishes the season undefeated (ex. Utah, Boise State, Ball State), they automatically qualify. I mean, who is to deny an undefeated team a chance at a national title. Especially with the parody in college athletics these days.

Seed the teams 1-8. And just like the NCAA BBall tourney, the higher seed gets to play at the site closest to their home. So in the first round, we have the Cotton (Dallas), Capital One (Orlando) and 2 of the 4 BCS bowls (Pasadena, Tempe, New Orleans, Miami). Now for teams like Ohio State and Notre Dame, none of those are close, but who we kidding, the best football is down south so this would work out fine.

The semis would be held at the remaining two sites and of course, the championship held at one of the sites in the first round, just like it is now.

Game times go Noon, 3:15, 6:30 and 9:45pm, working our way from East to West. And if that means getting these college games to move faster, then so be it. One idea: stop reviewing every tick-tack play.

So what are the problems with my system? Well, travel could be. Not just for the fans to follow their teams but for the teams as well. Money is tight these days and fuel prices are volatile. Also, what about season's like this year where we could have 3 undefeated non-BCS schools, 3 Big 12 teams and 2 SEC teams? Well, it would look bad but just like March Madness, you can't control who gets there. Just let it happen.

I'm just tired of a system that makes no real sense. Is the BCS better than what we had? Absolutely. But let's continue to make progress. Just like they added instant replay, we can add the playoffs. The TV ratings would skyrocket and the money would still be rolling in. And the best thing, the national champion will have earned it. And that's all I want.

NFL Week 11 Power Rankings

Hard to believe but only 6 weeks left in the NFL season. But before I even think about those 6 weeks, how about the week that was? Matt Stover sets the record for consecutive made extra points. The Bengals-Eagles game finishes in a tie, for the first time since 2002. And the Steelers-Chargers game ends 11-10, becoming the first game EVER to end with that score. Folks, this was a week to remember.

But above all, the playoff picture is slowly starting to clear up. Teams like the Chargers and Jags know their backs are against the wall while the Colts and Cowboys look to getting back on track. Plus, the Giants and Titans have officially put themselves in the position of Super Bowl favorites for their respective conference. This was a curse for the Cowboys last season (not the Pats) so we'll see what happens with these two.

All I know is next week, I am excited to see my top two teams in each conference go head-to-head.

1. NY Giants (9-1) - They look good in every area. This team is better than last year's super Bowl team. And that's scary. (Next @ AZ)
2. Arizona (7-3) - Gotta give them the respect they deserve. This offense is just amazing. Should be a fun one against the G-Men. (Next vs. NYG)
3. Carolina (8-2) - Record looks good but they have struggled the past two games...and they were against OAK and DET. (Next @ ATL)
4. Tampa Bay (7-3) - The defense continues to lead this team to victory. Loss of Earnest Graham will hurt down the road. (Next @ DET)
5. Atlanta (6-4) - Despite the loss, they showed some real fight. Matt Ryan may have already clinched rookie of the year. (Next vs. CAR)
6. Washington (6-4) - Offense was pathetic vs. DAL and while two home losses in a row is bad, this team will rebound. (Next @ SEA)
7. Dallas (6-4) - Wasn't the prettiest win but it got the job done. Marion Barber in the 4th quarter is impossible to stop. (Next vs. SF)
8. Green Bay (5-5) - Talk about a beatdown. Packers let out all of their 1st half frustration against the Bears. (Next Mon @ NO)
9. Philadelphia (5-4-1) - Yeah, the tie to CIN is bad but even more pathetic, Donovan McNabb didn't know ties even existed! (Next @ BAL)
10. Minnesota (5-5) - I'm not sure if this team is gonna ever compete for the playoffs until they get a real QB under center. (Next @ JAX)
11. New Orleans (5-5) - Not out of the playoff picture yet but they may be if those 3 players get suspended by the NFL. (Next Mon vs. GB)
12. Chicago (5-5) - Not sure what happened to this team. Good thing is that their division is as mediocre as they are. (Next @ STL)
13. San Francisco (3-7) - Good to see Mike Singletary get his first win. Cause he may not get another until STL again in WK 16. (Next @ DAL)
14. Seattle (2-8) - Matt Hasselback is back, meaning the Seahawks have a fighting chance to win some ballgames again. (Next vs. WAS)
15. St. Louis (2-8) - I don't understand why this team just can't function without Steven Jackson. It's just downright pathetic. (Next vs. CHI)
16. Detroit (0-10) - I admire how hard they fight for that first win. Too bad it's not coming this season. (Next vs. TB)

1. Tennessee (10-0) - Gotta be impressed with this team. They win the tough games. They don't win big but they win. (Next vs. NYJ)
2. NY Jets (7-3) - Brett Favre has brought new life and hope to this team. He beat the Pats but can he beat the unbeaten Titans? (Next @ TEN)
3. Indianapolis (6-4) - Beware teams. the Colts are back. Peyton and Co. are scoring and the defense is starting to step up. (Next @ SD)
4. Pittsburgh (7-3) - Just an ugly game vs. SD but like they seem to do, they win the ugly games. Short week to prepare/heal for Cincy. (Next Thu vs. CIN)
5. New England (6-4) - Yeah, they lost at home to the Jets. More importantly, Matt Cassel showed he's worth big money in the offseason. (Next @ MIA)
6. Denver (6-4) - Same as the Colts. This offense has woken up and the defense is bending but not breaking. (Next vs. OAK)
7. Miami (6-4) - May not know it but they've won 4 in a row. Competition has been light but hey, wins are wins right? (Next vs. NE)
8. Baltimore (6-4) - After a lot of smack talk about shutting down the NYG ground game, it was the Ravens who were shut up. (Next vs. PHI)
9. San Diego (4-6) - Another tough loss for this team. Probably the best 4-6 team in the history of the NFL. (Next vs. IND)
10. Jacksonville (4-6) - Had the Titans beaten and blew it. So what's the word to describe the season so far: Disappointment. (Next vs. MIN)
11. Cleveland (4-6) - I don't get it. 2-0 on Mondays. 2-6 every other night. Watch out PHI on Monday, Dec. 15. (Next vs. HOU)
12. Buffalo (5-5) - There were 4-0 and then, 5-1. Now, they are 5-5 and J.P. Losman looks like a great choice at QB now. (Next @ KC)
13. Cinicnnati (1-8-1) - Their record says they stink but this team isn't that bad. But it is fitting they missed that FG to win. (Next Thu @ PIT)
14. Kansas City (1-9) - Still impressed with how this team continues to keep it close with every team they play. Credit Herm. (next vs. BUF)
15. Houston (3-7) - Sage played well I guess. But this team just isn't good without Matt Schaub healthy and throwing to Andre Johnson. (Next @ CLE)
16. Oakland (2-8) - Best story of the week may be that Jim Fassel actaully wants to coach this team. He really must be desperate. (Next @ DEN)

2008 NFL ATS Pick 'Em: Week 11

What up peeps. Matt Barnes here. For those who I have not yet met, your loss. No, I'm kidding. Glad to take this off the hands of Luke for a week as he celebrates his final weekend as an undergraduate student. It has to feel pretty good, considering the guy has attended two universities, had three different majors, and six different residences. Too bad he has no real future in life huh?

But enough potshots at my friend Luke, time to get to business. The ATS season is heading to the stretch run. No more bye weeks so a full slate of 16 games each week. Some started out strong with the solid Jets pick. Others, like myself, already find themselves in the hole.

After ten weeks, Josh is our leader. Justin was at the top but after a Detroit Lions-like 3-11 performance last week, he is now in fifth. Meanwhile, you know the saying that if you're not the lead dog, the view stays the same? Well, right now, I have 19 white asses in front of my face. (Yeah, I can say that cause I'm the only black guy, hell, just call me token).

But enough chit chat, on to the picks. Some of the usual special sections are extinct this week. Why? I don't know. Maybe because I'm not worthy of such hilarity. Plus, comments were scarce, even from "Mr. Reliable" Jake. Regardless, the post must go on...
New York Jets @ New England Patriots (-3)

Maxine Hunt Pick of the Week -- Almost 1 p.m. when making the pick, so she took the first game. "Benny and the Jets" -- and she was singing it. You bet, Maxine Hunt singing "Benny and the Jets." Suddenly I flashed forward to some kind of family reunion. I guess I'm having LOST withdrawal or something.

NYJ: Chewy, Hunt, Jeff, Polito, Braves, Bursa, Sara, Luke, Josh
NE: Barnes, Lucius, Brian, Devin, Rapking, Jake, Shane, Justin, Grothaus, Curtis, Bart

Denver Broncos @ Atlanta Falcons (-6)
When I look at this game, all I can think of is that Super Bowl game between the two just 10 years ago. But even more memorable, that damn dirty bird dance that swept a nation. For the love of God, I hope someone brings that back. My Pick: ATL (-6)

Devin: "Good things are happening in Atlanta. Denver probably wont throw for 450 yds this week" Well, considering Denver has no run game, it's possible.

Hunt: "Originally went with the Falcons on this one, but then changed to the Broncos after finding out the Falcons have a worse passing defense than the Browns do. And that's counting the Browns' game against the Broncos last week, when Cleveland KNEW the running game would be absent." Oh to be a Browns fan...

Luke: "Jay Cutler > Matt Ryan. It's that simple" Denver run game <>

DEN: Lucius, Hunt, Bursa, Luke, Chewy, Jake, Shane
ATL: Barnes, Jeff, Devin, Rapking, Polito, Justin, Bart, Sara, Josh, Braves, Brian

Oakland Raiders @ Miami Dolphins (-10.5)
Another West Coast team traveling to the East Coast for an early start. So far, West Coast has yet to win so Raiders will lose. And since they are the Raiders, they probably lose bad. My Pick: MIA (-10.5)

Devin: "Please lose by less than 10. Please." Sounds like someone is begging.

Kevin: "Wildcats offense jumps out from behind the couch in this game. Yeah, you have to be a loyal reader of my comments to get that one (see: Dallas-St. Louis pick from Week 7)."

Luke: 'Too many points for a Miami team I don't trust. Wouldn't surprise me if the Raiders won straight up. Actually, on second thought, it probably would." Yeah, that would be a huge surprise. Quick, name 3 players on the Raiders defense!

OAK: Lucius, Devin, Sara, Josh, Braves, Luke, Chewy, Brian
MIA: Barnes, Hunt, Jeff, Polito, Bursa, Bart, Sara, Jake, Shane

Baltimore Ravens @ New York Giants (-6.5)
Yet another Super Bowl rematch from the past 10 years. This Super Bowl sucked though. In fact, the most exciting thing about his Super Bowl was the halftime show. Aerosmith, Britney Spears, N'Sync, Nelly and Mary J. Blige. Now that's a halftime show. My Pick: NYG (-6.5)

Devin: "I know they are going to lose one of these games." Not sure which team you're even talking about.

Kevin: "Q: Why wouldn't you want to be a receiver for the Ravens?
A: You'd always be catching Flacco.

OK, so it was a bad joke (but don't be surprised to see that as a headline somewhere eventually). If you want another reason for my pick, I just remembered my last night in Australia, we went to a bar with some random band thrown together on stage. It was more of a DJ rapping out to random mixes. His shirt said Zoo York and I remember simply yelling it. A lot. So I'm taking Zoo York." As if the joke wasn't bad enough, the story and reasoning for the pick take it a step further

Luke: "I should be a fan of the Ravens for knocking out Derek Anderson from my life, but they still have Ray Lewis." Yeah, and he killed a guy

BAL: Lucius, Justin, Jake
NYG: Everyone Else

Houston Texans @ Indianapolis Colts (-8.5)
Just going to point out one thing. The first name of the quarterback of the Texans is Sage. That's the same name as an herb used for seasoning of food. 'Nuff said. My Pick: IND (-8.5)

Devin: "I hate Peyton. Has worked so far." Do you hate Peyton the QB or Peyton the commercial whore? Cause those are two different people. I prefer the QB.

Kevin: "Too bad the Texans couldn't keep Sage Rosenfels out of the lineup more often this season. Same goes for Ahman Green. There was a Ron Dayne sighting in Madison this week. Did you know he supposedly talked with the Titans before this season started? Tennessee was worried about Lendale White coming off a knee injury. I guess all the right choices were made in that scenario. Including the part that sent Ron Dayne back to the home of his alma mater. Life is good.

This was a close, amazing game when these teams played earlier this season. This could be a much higher margin of defeat for the Colts as long as Marvin Harrison is all there and not concussed." God, Ron Dayne has to be pushing 400 lbs these days
HOU: Lucius, Devin, Rapking, Polito, Josh
IND: Barnes, Hunt, Jeff, Justin, Bursa, Bart, Sara, Braves, Luke, Chewy, Jake, Brian, Shane

Chicago Bears @ Green Bay Packers (-4)
I feel bad for Jake. So just for him and his sanity, I'm gonna take the Packers. That and I just can't believe Rex Grossman is starting another game in the NFL. My Pick: GB (-4)

Kevin: "Back the Pack cause the Pack is Back! How was this line formulated? Anyone? Anyone? Bueller?" Sounds like a job for Wikipedia

Luke: "REX GROSSMAN ON THE ROAD!" LOUD NOISES!

CHI: Jeff, Devin, Rapking, Sara, Braves, Chewy, Jake
GB: Matt, Lucius, Hunt, Polito, Justin, Bursa, Bart, Josh, Luke, Brian, Shane

Philadelphia Eagles (-9) @ Cincinnati Bengals
The final 7 games of Marvin Lewis' run with the Bengals start. Unless he pulls out a miracle and wins them all. My Pick: CIN (+9)

Devin: "Now that the Bengals won one they can go back to losing by 30pts per game." That or they keep winning. Haha, yeah, that's not happening.

Kevin: "You said you wanted Luke to end his college career with a bang, so I'm taking the Bang-als. If I lose this pick, I blame Luke. And Corey Taylor. And Bursa." Pressure is on boys. Even on Corey who isn't even in the league. Ouch.

PHI: Lucius, Devin, Sara, Josh, Chewy, Jake, Brian, Shane
CIN: Barnes, Hunt, Jeff, Rapking, Polito, Justin, Bursa, Bart, Braves, Luke

New Orleans Saints (-5) @ Kansas City Chiefs
Anyone else disappointed that Herm hasn't gone crazy yet? He's due for a press conference meltdown soon. Maybe after Drew Brees throws for 450 yds this week, it'll finally come. My Pick: NO (-5)

Devin: "KC is due for a 30pt beat down. Herm is due for some great quotes and a new job." Amen brother. This could be really ugly

Kevin: "Ballbuster Pick of the Week: Picking the 8th game because I had a sweeps piece that was 8 minutes long tonight. It was a one-on-one interview with the Madison Police Chief, who's starting his 25th year in Madison PD. So I'm taking the team whose #25 has been around longer. Reggie Bush? Or rookie Jamaal Charles? Saints it is. (Side note: I can't seem to remember too much about the USC vs. Notre Dame game from 2005 -- the one some called, "The Game of the Century" -- and what was written after that game. I was glad to find out that at least wikipedia called the final scoring play, "The Bush Push." If not, I would have been highly disappointed that no one came up with it earlier. No, I haven't forgiven him for it to this day, though I was glad that it was an incredible game -- at the time, the most watched college football game in nine years. Reggie, you can at least make up for SOME of it by getting me a win this week... in a game picked randomly... based off an NBC 15 sweeps piece.)"

Luke: "Have to love Herm going for two last week. Meanwhile, this spread seems suspiciously too low" Almost as good as them going for two is the fact that they missed an XP earlier. This team is miserable.

NO: Barnes, Lucius, Hunt, Jeff, Devin, Rapking, Polito, Bursa, Sara, Josh, Luke, Chewy, Jake, Shane
KC: Justin, Bart, Braves, Brian

Detroit Lions @ Carolina Panthers (-14)
I'm the lucky one who gets this dandy of a game at 1pm on FOX. Only thing that could make this game worth watching is Gus Johnson. My Pick: CAR (-14)

Devin: "Does Detroit get any points because Marinelli is trying hard. Come back and coach the d-line anytime you want coach." Yeah, he may have be in over his head

Kevin: "15 was too many points for the Chargers last week over the Chiefs (and, oddly enough, I'm listening to the song, "Fifteen" by Taylor Swift as I type this). 14, however, will be just fine for the Panthers. Don't be that surprised by the lack of passing game for Carolina last week -- the Raiders are the 13th ranked passing defense in the league and hold opposing QBs to the 12th lowest passer rating. But the Panthers rank 6th and 4th in those same categories, respectively. And they will face JaMarcus Russell (doubtful) or Andrew Walter (more likely) at home." Stop reading this when I read Taylor Swift

DET: Lucius, Polito, Justin, Bursa, Sara, Josh, Luke, Chewy, Shane
CAR: Barnes, Hunt, Jeff, Devin, Rapking, Bart, Sara, Jake, Braves, Brian

Minnesota Vikings @ Tampa Bay Buccaneers (-3.5)
Tough one to pick. The Vikings are playing good football finally. The Bucs are coming off a bye week so who knows what the hell to expect. I do like the mascot matchup though of Vikings vs. Buccaneers. Sounds like a good movie to me. My Pick: TB (-3.5)

Kevin: "And commence all of the automotive puns dealing with Cadillac Williams's return to the roster this week. Hopefully his partial season doesn't end up like the real-life automotive industry. Somewhere Henry Ford just took a straight shot of Wild Turkey (or the personal favorite of Lucius, Old Fitzgerald. If you ever have the opportunity to have some of that stuff, don't do it. Believe me, don't.)." Yea, Old Fitzgerald is no joke

Luke: "Yep, Adrian Peterson would have looked pretty good in a Browns uniform. Nice pick Phil." Correction: No one looks good in a Browns jersey.

MIN: Jeff, Devin, Polito, Braves, Luke, Brian, Shane
TB: Barnes, Lucius, Hunt, Rapking, Justin, Bursa, Bart, Sara, Josh, Chewy, Jake

St. Louis Rams @ San Francisco 49ers (-6)
When I first saw the Niners were favored, I couldn't believe it. But then I remembered just how bad the Rams defense is and got over it. My Pick: SF (-6)

Devin: "I hope I am wrong. Singletary needs a win and he needs to be the coach of the 49ers." Needs to? Why? So Coors Light has a new coach to make fun of?

Kevin: "I listened in to a conversation of about 20 minutes on Jonathan Taylor Thomas's (JTT) sexuality last week at a friend's apartment. I had no clue what anyone was really talking about or reasoning with and decided the only thing I could add would be a snide remark about how it must be something with the three-initial names, like JTO, or the quarterback formerly known as John Tremain.

Part of me wants to change this pick depending on Steven Jackson's status for the game. But seeing as how I'll probably forget, let this be a testament to all the work that I don't really put into these picks." Truly confused

STL: Hunt, Devin, Rapking, Justin, Josh, Braves, Brian
SF: Barnes, Lucius, Jeff, Polito, Bursa, Bart, Sara, Luke, Chewy, Jake, Shane

Arizona Cardinals (-3) @ Seattle Seahawks
Any other week, this is an easy pick. Cardinals are clearly the better team on paper but the impact of Matt Hasselback coming back and playing his first game at home in chilly Seattle makes this pick a toss-up. And for me, that means I'll make the wrong one. My Pick: AZ (-3)

Devin: "Arizona is good. Seattle sucks. Warner is MVPish. I cant name Seattle's QB." I call your bluff Frank

Kevin: "If the Cardinals decide to take the Broncos playbook and let Kurt Warner throw all day, it could be the worst thing ever for opposing defenses. Plus, the most exciting offense in the NFL to watch

Luke: "MVP for Kurt Warner. Get ready for Canton." Kurt Warner in the Hall of Fame? Say it ain't so
AZ: Barnes, Hunt, Lucius, Devin, Rapking, Polito, Braves, Luke, Chewy, Brian, Shane
SEA: Jeff, Justin, Bursa, Bart, Sara, Josh, Jake

Tennessee Titans (-3) @ Jacksonville Jaguars
The Jags were my Super Bowl pick. Yeah, laugh it up all you want. But you won't be laughing when they beat the Titans today. Maybe Jack Del Rio will lighten up after this win too. My Pick: JAX (+3)

Devin: "At 3 points I pick em till they lose. Unless apparently they are playing wyoming." Nice college football reference

Luke: "They just don't lose. It's that simple." Another bad use of the word "simple".

TEN: Lucius, Devin, Sara, Josh, Braves, Luke, Chewy, Jake, Shane
JAX: Barnes, Hunt, Jeff, Rapking, Polito, Justin, Bursa, Bart, Brian

San Diego Chargers @ Pittsburgh Steelers (-4.5)
Since it is a 4:15 start, the Chargers have a legit shot to win this game. But seriously, if they could barely put away the Chiefs in 4 quarters, what makes you think they can handle the Steelers? My Pick: PIT (-4.5)

Devin: "Who are the San Diego Chargers? Seriously. Any input would be greatly appreciated." Wikipedia says they are an NFL team

Kevin: "I'd like to take this opportunity to thank odds-makers for the half-point spread. Anything that doesn't end in a .5 means there can be ties. These scenarios enrage Lucius, who once told me that tying a game is worse than losing -- and that it was like kissing your sister.

This got me thinking -- what if you don't have a sister? Would you ever really, truly understand the meaning of that phrase? I motion to change the phrase to something else. I'll probably spend the rest of the NFL season trying to think one up." I'm on the edge of my seat

Luke: "No way am I backing Norv Turner on the road." I wouldn't back Norv Turner anywhere

SD: Lucius, Hunt, Jeff, Justin, Sara, Braves, Brian, Shane
PIT: Barnes, Devin, Rapking, Polito, Bursa, Bart, Josh, Luke, Chewy, Jake

Dallas Cowboys (-1) @ Washington Redskins
I'm looking at this game politically. I want Dallas (Dubya) to lose and Washington (our govt/economy) to recover from the Steelers loss. Plus, I don't think Tony Romo is the savior for this team. My Pick: WAS (+1)

Kevin: "Romo may be back. Portis may be out. That, and the next guy to go to Washington, Barack Obama, screwed me over on my picks last week. But whatever, he can do what he wants now. And that includes reminding me of the Dave Chappelle Racial Draft and thinking it's going to be Barack saying "For Shizzle" next (I fully expect the government to seek out this e-mail and arrest me by the end of next week). Bonus points for bringing up the Racial Draft

Luke: "Starting to get healthy ... I think." Well, according to Jessica Simpson in the latest US weekly...

DAL: Lucius, Hunt, Jeff, devin, Rapking, Polito, Braves, Luke, Shane
WAS: Barnes, Justin, Bursa, Bart, Sara, Josh, Chewy, Jake, Brian

Cleveland Browns @ Buffalo Bills (-5.5)
Browns on national TV again? Hasn't America suffered enough with the economy and all? Oh well, maybe we can another defensive collapse. Though this time, I'm thinking it's the Bills that do it. Curveballed ya huh? My Pick: CLE (+5.5)

Devin: "Still riding the Brady Quinn high. Maybe I should be riding the Browns defense low?" That doesn't sound like a fun ride at all

Kevin: I may be done-skis before this game even starts. I fully plan on needing to drink before, during and after this game. I'm sure that'll make for a pleasant Tuesday morning to start off my work week. But we all know I'll need it to get through this one." Not to mention the random rambling from Kornheiser in the booth are enough to make your head hurt

Luke: "So in one week I am backing the Browns, Lions, Raiders and the Bengals. This is not good." But you know what is good. You not taking anymore college classes

CLE: Barnes, Lucius, Hunt, Devin, Justin, Bursa, Sara, Josh, Luke, Chewy, Brian, Shane
BUF: Jeff, Rapking, Polito, Bart, Braves, Jake

Alright, if I screwed up, my bad. Check your picks to make sure. Enjoy the games everyone.
